Legend has it that during the night, while the Indians slept, a Great Black Bear living on top of Black Bear Mountain crept to the canoes. Wanting the tribe to stay, he pushed their canoes into the flowing waters. When the Chief awoke the next morning, he found only the paw prints of the Great Black Bear. Believing this was a sign from the spirits, the Indians made their village at the base of the mountain and from then on were watched over by the Great Black Bear. Although, no one has ever actually seen the Great Black Bear, paw prints are often found on the trails of Black Bear Mountain. |
