Taking care of other people's children is a tremendous responsibility that we take very seriously. At Black Bear Lake, we are looking for the kind of staff who are just as serious about their summer job, AND about having some serious FUN!
We create an upbeat and positive environment of mutual respect at camp. Group Leaders and Counselors are provided Ongoing Leadership Training that will benefit their college applications, build their job resume', and enrich the rest of their lives.

What do we look for in our Summer Staff?
- A Serious Work Ethic - A constant commitment to providing the best summer possible for Black Bear Lake campers
- Teamwork - Socially able to work with and support others, while accepting on-going feedback and evaluation from supervisors.
- Intelligence - Able to problem solve, and make sound decisions.
- Empathy - Sensitivity, compassion and understanding with children.
- Adaptability - The ability to think quickly on your feet and improvise.
- Positive Disposition - An optimistic, upbeat outlook with lots of energy and spunk!
- Experience with young people - Preferred, but not required.

Black Bear Lake Summer Camp Job Descriptions
Group Leader - Each group of children is led by a Group Leader who fills the role of parent, coach, teacher and psychologist when needed. The Group Leader is the true leader of the group- responsible for everything from attendance to happiness. The Group Leader also oversees their "JC" co-counselors. Group Leaders assist specialists at elective activities, and if qualified, can lead a select few. Group Leaders have all completed at least one year of college. Many are young teachers.
Junior Counselors - JC's are the "big brothers and sisters" of their counselors. Each group of children has one or two JCs as well as the Group Leader. Much of the camper’s summer success lies with the relationship with their counselors. For most campers, great counselors=great summer! JCs assist specialists during elective activities, and provide motivation and emotional support to the campers throughout the day. Junior Counselors are entering 11th and 12th grade.
Athletic Specialists - Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Roller Hockey, Street Hockey, Soccer, Tennis, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Archery, Mountain Biking, Mountain Boarding and Martial Arts. Specialists lead the groups of children with the assistance of the counselors. Athletic Specialists are usually teachers with experience coaching children.
Creative Specialist - Drawing, Painting, Pottery, Woodworking, Jewelry Making, Leatherworks, Music, Dance, Drama, Science, Nature, Camping, Newspaper, Cooking, Robotics, Rocketry, Gifted & Talented, and Website Development
Waterfront/Pool - Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Boating, Fishing, SCUBA. Lifeguards need Red Cross certification, and must be at least an entering freshman in college.
Support Services - Building and Grounds, Office, Transportation, Food Service
Transportation - Bus Drivers, Bus Counselors- mostly JC's
Supervisory Staff - Division Leaders, Assistant Division Leaders, Parent Relations, Programming, Swim Director, Counselors In Training Program
